DELAURO ANNOUNCES $364,673 GRANT FOR NEW HAVEN HOMELESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

-

New Haven, CT – May 2, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) announced a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to Columbus House, a non-profit based in New Haven that provides meals, housing, support programs, and job training services to the local homeless and disadvantaged population.

The grant is part of the Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance awards, which provides funding for assistance programs for homeless persons including transitional and permanent housing, and supportive services.

“I am very pleased that Columbus House’s efforts and success in helping the least fortunate among us have been recognized. These vital funds will enable Columbus House to continue their good work, helping support local homeless persons so that they can get back on their feet through beneficial services such as job training,” said Congresswoman DeLauro. “With more than 700 people in New Haven experiencing homelessness, and over 33,000 across Connecticut, this is a critical issue for our communities.”

“We are delighted to have been awarded funding to provide housing for up to 24 chronically homeless adults in and around New Haven. Sixteen of these units will be designated for Veterans who are homeless,” said Alison Cunningham, Executive Director of Columbus House. “Each new unit will further our goal, the goals of HUD and the goals of the Greater New Haven Regional Alliance to End Homelessness of doing away with this crisis for the most vulnerable in our midst. Columbus House is grateful for the support of Congresswoman DeLauro who has been a champion for adequate funding for McKinney Vento programs that provide us the opportunity to house people who are homeless.”
