Gov. Malloy Signs Order Strengthening State Building Code to Limit Storm Damage as a...

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that - with Connecticut facing more frequent and severe weather events as a result of global warming - he is directing state agencies to develop new building code standards that will better protect residential and commercial structures from damage caused by flooding and high winds.

CHFA AWARDS FEDERAL TAX CREDITS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) Executive Director Karl Kilduff and CHFA Board Chairwoman and Department of Housing (DOH) Commissioner Evonne M. Klein, announced that CHFA’s Board of Directors has approved $7.1 million in Federal 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs) to six proposed affordable multifamily housing developments. These developments will result in 320 affordable rental units and 65 market rate units. The $7.1 million in LIHTCs are expected to generate more than $70 million private equity for the developments. The development of these properties is projected to generate 527 jobs and $175,680 million in economic activity.

Murphy’s CLEAN UP Act will pair two tax incentives to spur investment in the cleanup of brownfields sites and ultimately help cities and towns increase tax revenues, expand economic development, and protect the environment.

As controversy continues to swirl around the water crisis in Flint, MI, where that city’s public water supply has been contaminated with toxic levels of lead, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced that 99% of the state’s approximately 2,500 Public Water Systems (PWS) are in compliance with federal lead standards for drinking water.  DPH’s Drinking Water Section (DWS) oversees the administration of state and federal drinking water regulations for those systems, which provide water to roughly 2.9 million Connecticut residents and visitors on a daily basis.

Courtney Hosts USDA Grant And Loan Program Seminars For Local Leaders

Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) concluded two days of seminars designed to inform local leaders in eastern Connecticut about grant opportunities available through the USDA-Rural Development Direct Loan & Grant Programs. At events held in Dayville and Colchester, Congressman Courtney discussed the loan program which supported $38.6 million in loans and $5.2 million in grants in Connecticut’s Second Congressional District last year. That funding helped to launch several projects such as expanding the municipal sewer system in Deep River, purchasing new emergency room equipment at Day Kimball Hospital, and building a new fire house in the East Putnam Fire District, among others.
