WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 23, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today applauded the news that Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven, Inc. has been awarded a Capital Grant of $100,000 from NeighborWorks® America. The grant will be used to make low-cost loans available to homeowners in the Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven who want to reinvest in their homes.
“This grant will help further Neighborhood Housing Services’ mission of helping New Haven’s neighborhoods succeed, supporting families in our community and strengthening our local economy,” said DeLauro. “NHS has played a positive role in our communities for over three decades, revitalizing neighborhoods and changing lives. Kudos to NHS for winning this grant and I look forward to seeing the results in Newhallville.”
Jim Paley, Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven, said: “Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven is delighted to receive funding from NeighborWorks® America to support our efforts to generate increased private reinvestment in Newhallville. In the past few years, our organization has acquired 25 dilapidated vacant houses in this neighborhood that we will rehabilitate for low- and moderate-income, first-time homebuyers. Because the houses we own are in carefully defined clusters, we expect that the impact of our work will motivate existing owners to reinvest in their properties, thereby contributing to our overall neighborhood revitalization goals.”
The funding for this grant was provided by legislation passed by Congress and signed into law earlier last month. It supports NeighborWorks organizations nationwide in their efforts to revitalize and strengthen their communities, promote and preserve affordable housing for the residents of their service areas, and create or sustain jobs through local NeighborWorks-supported projects and activities.
