Washington, DC – July 30, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) voted for the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act for FY 2011 today, which will create an estimated 160,000 new jobs and increase investments in our roads, bridges and homes. This critical legislation will provide assistance to American families who have been hurt by the recession in recent years, as well as strengthening our economy by making key investments in improving our nation’s infrastructure.

The legislation will address the needs our of vast transportation systems, making certain that they are safe, secure, and up-to-date. It also invests in the next generation of high-speed passenger rail, commuter rail, and light rail systems to help increase use of public transportation and reduce our dangerous dependency on foreign oil. And to spur growth in abandoned commercial and industrial sites, this bill will provide funding for grants to revitalize neighborhoods and encourages sustainable practices in local housing, transportation, and energy planning that will utilize dollars more effectively and create more livable communities for all.

This bill will ensure that all Americans will have access to housing and shelter by increasing funding for rental vouchers and housing assistance, benefiting our neediest individuals, the disabled, the elderly, and our homeless veterans. Additionally, it will help families who are at risk of foreclosure to retain their homes, and funds the HEARTH Act, which seeks to end homelessness in America.

The total investments in this bill are expected to create 160,000 new jobs in this country, and it comes in under last year?s funding level by $500 million and $1.3 billion below the President’s budget.

“This critical legislation addresses the needs of many American families that are continuing to struggle in today’s economy by creating jobs, spurring economic growth, and ensuring homeowner relief. It also addresses our nation’s crumbling infrastructure, making sure our roads and bridges are safe while investing in new high-speed rail systems that will save money and protect our environment,” said Congresswoman DeLauro. “By helping Americans today, and planning for long-term economic stability and success, this bill is a strong investment in our nation’s future.”
