Lieberman, Blumenthal, Himes Announce $108,384 for Bridgeport’s Homeless Veterans

WASHINGTON, DC – March 30, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Senators Joseph Lieberman and Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Jim Himes announced a $108,384 grant today that will assist homeless veterans in Bridgeport with permanent housing and support. The grant will provide 10 of Bridgeport’s homeless veterans with housing vouchers, as well as clinical and supportive services through the West Haven VA Medical Center.

“Ensuring veterans have access to safe, affordable housing is the least we can do for those who risked everything to protect us,” Congressman Himes said. “I am pleased Bridgeport will receive funding to help these brave men and women.”

“Our veterans, both in Connecticut and across the country, are facing daily challenges in finding affordable housing,” Senator Lieberman said. “We owe a great deal to these brave men and women and these housing vouchers are but one step in paying back that debt.”

“We must keep faith with the brave men and women who serve this country by ensuring that no veteran is left without a safe and affordable place to live once returning home,” said Senator Blumenthal. “These funds will help combat the unacceptable problem of veterans’ homelessness, allowing Connecticut’s veterans to live with the honor and dignity they deserve.”

This funding was awarded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH). Veterans participating in the HUD-VASH program rent privately-owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent. VA also offers eligible homeless veterans clinical and supportive services through its medical centers across the US.
