ARTISTS VILLAGE A REALITY – ALL 17 HOMES BUILT BY IN-STATE CONTRACTORS
– DEDICATION TO BE HELD NOVEMBER 14, 2011-

EAST HADDAM, CONN. – November 10, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The nation’s first two-time Tony Award winning theatre Goodspeed Musicals’ dream of building an Artists Village is finally a reality. Seventeen new homes to be used for actor housing on the Goodspeed Campus in East Haddam, Conn. are nearly complete. A formal dedication ceremony is planned for Monday, November 14, 2011. The new actor housing initiative represents the largest capital project in Goodspeed history with a total budget of $5.5 million dollars all of which were spent in-state. Eighteen contractors and twenty-six suppliers from the state of Connecticut, many located right in Middlesex County, were used for this “green” project. A total of 113 construction jobs and an additional eight Administrative/Managerial jobs were created. A project of this magnitude is certain to have a positive and long lasting economic impact in East Haddam as well as throughout the state of Connecticut.

“The New Actor Housing Project is nearing completion. This brings a smile to the faces of everyone involved, particularly those who have been doing the heavy lifting. This Artists Village sets the standard worldwide. The actors who have been living there are thrilled. Our reputation is soaring” explained Board President Francis G. Adams Jr.

The enhancement of Goodspeed’s campus will boost economic development and tourism in several ways including: allowing for more productions per year which increases employment, increasing Connecticut tourism and tax revenue as well as allowing for more arts education activities during the theatre’s off season. Goodspeed Musicals anticipates this expansion will eventually serve as a catalyst for further economic development in the historic East Haddam Village and increase local tax revenue.

With this new Artists Village, including the seventeen new houses comprised of 65 new bedrooms and bathrooms to complement the existing collection of properties, Goodspeed’s campus will grow even livelier as an artist colony buzzing with creativity. In addition to the many actors, artisans and technical staff living in the village and appearing in Goodspeed productions, the village will also serves as a hub for new work. Writing teams and their creative partners will be offered the opportunity to spend time on the the campus with the singular goal of creating new musicals. Whether the writers starting from scratch or polishing work in progress, these homes will become incubators for our musical theatre future and hopefully the next great Broadway hit.

Dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre, Goodspeed Musicals produces three musicals each season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn., and additional productions at The Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Conn., which was opened in 1984 for the development of new musicals. The first regional theatre to receive two Tony Awards (for outstanding achievement), Goodspeed also maintains the Scherer Library of Musical Theatre and The Max Showalter Center for Education in the Musical Theater.
