U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) received a commitment from U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Julián Castro to assist the former residents of Church Street South in New Haven and to work to increase access to affordable housing for Connecticut residents. Murphy underscored the decrepit conditions that residents at Church Street South were forced to endure and requested that HUD continue to diligently work with Connecticut to resolve the problem. Murphy specifically asked for Secretary Castro to commit to rebuilding Connecticut’s affordable housing capacity, and to explore new ways to ensure that HUD’s Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) is sufficiently working to provide families with housing that is decent, safe, and in good repair

Courtney Hosts USDA Grant And Loan Program Seminars For Local Leaders

Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) concluded two days of seminars designed to inform local leaders in eastern Connecticut about grant opportunities available through the USDA-Rural Development Direct Loan & Grant Programs. At events held in Dayville and Colchester, Congressman Courtney discussed the loan program which supported $38.6 million in loans and $5.2 million in grants in Connecticut’s Second Congressional District last year. That funding helped to launch several projects such as expanding the municipal sewer system in Deep River, purchasing new emergency room equipment at Day Kimball Hospital, and building a new fire house in the East Putnam Fire District, among others.

HJR25 encourages the United States Congress to restore the presumption of service connection for Agent Orange exposure to “Blue Navy Veterans” who served in the coastal waters of Vietnam during the war.

Murphy’s legislation, the Healthy Homes Tax Credit Act, provides homeowners with a maximum tax credit of $5,000 to pay for lead, radon, or asbestos abatement.
