Himes, DeLauro Applaud HUD Grant for Grant Street Senior Apartments

WASHINGTON, DC – October 9, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Connecticut Representatives Jim Himes and Rosa DeLauro today applauded the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s announcement that the Grant Street Senior Apartments will receive a $151,919 grant to help senior citizens and persons with disabilities receive health care, meals, and other critical supportive services. The grants are awarded through HUD’s Multifamily Housing Service Coordinator Program (MHSC).

“This funding means more affordable housing and specialized services for our area’s senior citizens,” said Himes. “It is important that all seniors be able to age with dignity and live in comfort, and I look forward to working with Grant Street Senior Apartments to ensure our seniors can live independently as long as possible.”

“This grant is great news for the seniors and persons with disabilities who will be better able to access the services they need to live independently,” said DeLauro. “Our government has an obligation to help the most vulnerable among us live with dignity and this grant will further that goal.”

The grants are awarded to eligible owners of private housing developments that receive rental subsidies from HUD to house low-income individuals. These property owners or their management companies either hire or contract service coordinators with backgrounds in providing social services, especially to the frail elderly and people with disabilities, to assist their residents with special needs.

The grant awarded today is designed for an initial three-year period to allow eligible owners of multifamily housing for the elderly or disabled, to hire and support a service coordinator. The funds cover such costs as salary, benefits, quality assurance, training, office space, equipment, and other related administrative expenses.
