DeLauro Announces Over $9 Million in Housing Aid for 3rd District
Washington, DC – July 14, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced today the award of $9,089,530 in housing grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funds, which include Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG), HOME program grants, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) grants, will go to Hamden, Stratford, West Haven, and New Haven, and are to be distributed as such:
Hamden CDBG $590,888.00
Stratford CDBG $759,328.00
West Haven CDBG $804,944.00
New Haven CDBG $4,012,840.00
New Haven ESG $162,157.00
New Haven HOME $1,737,520.00
New Haven HOPWA $1,021,853.00
While all of these grants provide funding to state and local governments or private entities, each targets a specific goal.
The Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) aims to provide housing, suitable living situations and economic opportunities for low- and moderate- income individuals living in urban environments.
The Emergency Shelter Grant is another annual grant program which provides funds to improve the quality and increase the number of emergency homeless shelters.
The HOME program, which provides grants to states and local communities exclusively for the creation of affordable housing for low-income households, is the largest federal block grant of its kind and awards approximately $2 billion in funds each year.
The HOPWA grant program benefits low-income individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS and their families, providing housing and related supportive services.
“In these tough economic times, providing help to those who need it most is critical, and I am sure that the residents of the Hamden, Stratford, West Haven, and New Haven communities will benefit from these grants,” said Congresswoman DeLauro. “Local residents will benefit from the economic opportunities created, low-income families will be able to afford stable housing, the homeless will be able to get off of the streets, and those who have been diagnosed with HIV / AIDS and are in need of housing and support will be able to get it. I am very pleased with these grants, and I look forward to seeing the positive results.”
