DeLauro Announces Veterans Housing Assistance Funds for Waterbury and West Haven

-

Washington, DC – June 2, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) announced today that the Waterbury and West Haven Housing Authorities have been awarded HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers. The Waterbury Housing Authority will receive $188,526, and the West Haven Housing Authority will receive $196,470, part of $58,627,081 in housing support for homeless veterans being awarded nationwide.

The HUD-VASH voucher program combines rental assistance for homeless veterans with social services from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Roughly one third of the adult homeless population in the country is made up of veterans, and an additional 1.5 million veterans are considered to be at-risk for homelessness due to poverty, lack of support, and poor living conditions.

“It is a profound tragedy that so many Americans are homeless and that so many who are homeless are veterans. We have a moral obligation to those who have put their lives on the line for our nation, and these funds will help many of these heroes who live here in our local communities,” said Congresswoman DeLauro. “Especially in such tough economic times, it is essential that we provide basics such as housing assistance and clinical care for those who cannot afford it otherwise.”
