Lieberman Welcomes More Than $9.4 Million to add Affordable Rental Housing, “Green” Existing Public Housing in CT

-

WASHINGTON, DC – September 23, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today praised the release of $9,445,758 in Recovery Act funding to create new affordable rental housing and increase the energy efficiency of existing public and low income housing. These funds were distributed to five municipalities across the state giving them the resources to install new energy efficient technologies to conserve energy, such as Energy Star appliances, high-efficiency boilers/furnaces and programmable thermostats or controls.

The funds could also be used for the redevelopment or replacement of housing developments that were stalled because of a lack of financing. The grants were released by the federal Department Housing and Urban Development as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“I am pleased that this funding has been made available to provide a needed boost to public housing projects that had stalled due to lack of funding. These funds will help create much-needed quality affordable housing and provide additional support for the economy,” Lieberman said. “Also, increasing the energy efficiency of public and low income housing is not only good for the environment, but will lower the maintenance and upkeep costs of the buildings, allowing for lower rents for the residents.”

The following municipalities will be receiving funds:

Housing Authority of the City of Ansonia $682,500.00
Housing Authority of the City of Bridgeport $4,040,758
Housing Authority of the City of Meriden $897,500.00
Housing Authority of the City of Norwalk $2,057,500
Waterbury Housing Authority $1,767,500.00
