Lieberman Applauds More Than $59.5 Million in Recovery Act Funding for CT Railroad Improvements, Affordable Housing Initiatives
WASHINGTON, DC - August 26, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today praised the release of $43,791,192 for upgrades and improvements to Connecticut’s railroad infrastructure in New Haven and on the Danbury and Shoreline East Lines and $16 million for the development of affordable housing units across the state. The railroad grants will be used to build a new rail repair shop for the New Haven line, for an improved safety signal system on the Danbury Branch line, and for the expansion of the parking facilities at the Branford Railroad Station. These grants were released by the Department of Transportation as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The housing funds were awarded to the Connecticut Department of Community and Housing Development for the development and construction of quality, affordable housing for individuals and families affected by the current crisis. These funds were released by the Department of the Treasury as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“The rail lines in Southern Connecticut are a vital public transportation option for Connecticut’s commuters. These funds, in addition to the $31.5 million released last week, will create much needed jobs and ensure that the railways in Connecticut remain a safe and efficient system that is a model for commuter rails across the nation,” Lieberman said.
“These critical affordable housing funds are going to play an important role in keeping a roof over the heads of residents of Connecticut who have been hit the hardest by the recession. This money will not only ensure that these citizens are protected for the upcoming winter, but will also provide a boost to the struggling construction industry in our state.”
